You don’t need the new kindle!!!

/u/Knitfiendd · 2026-10-27 21:47 UTC

Friendly reminder that if your kindle works just fine, specially if you have more than one, you DONT NEED THE NEW ONE!!!

I saw someone saying this sub promotes overconsumption and they are so right. Why have we normalised always having the latest tech, when we can’t even tell a difference if it’s not by its color. We truly need to stop making the rich richer.

Just wanted to share my thoughts.

Murphy M4 - the superior ereader?

/u/naturalcog · 2026-10-27 09:33 UTC · source

Hey everyone, after a few weeks using the illusive Murphy M4 - CNC edition (sometimes known as Mofei M4) I can confirm that this is one of the most premium e-readers I’ve used.

For around $80USD on Ali Express, this thing packs a USB C port, almost/over DOUBLE the battery life of the XTEINK X4Pro and the Boox Picco (2000+mah), a backlight with adjustable temperature, SD card slot, allows custom OS’s (I run crosspoint), fits into X4 cases (as shown in the picture) and allows typical WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. There is truly nothing else I could want from an Ereader.

The worst thing about this e-reader is that it’s hard to come across. The supplier I bought this from has removed their listing from Ali Express, so I would recommend just to keep checking Ali Express for it. My one is the CNC M4 model which gives it a nice, premium metal edge that makes it feel like an Apple product.

It doesn’t have a built in magnet so I simply attached a MagSafe sticker magnet into the back of the device which worked wonders.

I have found that reading horizontal + using a smaller text size gives a more kindle-esque experience rather than using it vertically and having to move your eyes down different lines quite often.

It has a local website you can access in your website to wirelessly transfer ebooks which has just been so easy (though sometimes slow).

The USB C port means carrying one less charger, though I’ve found with reading on it for over an hour a day, it lasts me anywhere from a week and a half to 3 weeks, which suits me pretty well.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask but as someone who has used BOOX devices, Kindles, iPhones, iPads, etc for reading, this is finally one that just seems to tick all the boxes. Any questions feel free to ask!

am i the problem or xteink is a bit (a lot) overrated?

/u/ApartBread5855 · 2026-10-27 09:03 UTC

since pretty much everyone on the internet is calling xteink a game changer and a kindle killer, i couldn't help myself and ordered the X4 Pro. i had already read enough reviews to know that xteink isn't really something you can use straight out of the box, so I changed the firmware, installed new fonts, and tweaked a few settings. after just one hour of reading i put it up for sale.

i'm genuinely disappointed and honestly don't understand the hype or the "kindle killer" claims. the device feels slow and glitchy, and overall it delivers the exact opposite of a comfortable reading experience.

Pocket e-reader for work

/u/Shot_Taste8289 · 2026-10-27 23:17 UTC

I’ve recently fallen back in love with my e reader which is an old kindle, but I find it slightly too big to carry around at work where I occasionally get some downtime. I’m looking for a pocket e-reader something with a backlight that will support the kindle library but I also like the idea of tinkering with the OS.
I have looked a little into the xteink 4 pro but I’m a little scared that that will be too small?
Just an absolute novice in this space after a bit of advice.

6” ereader rec

/u/Darn-toot · 2026-10-27 18:44 UTC

Hi, I’m looking for a smallish ereader and I think 6” will hit the mark. I’ve had my kindle 12th gen paperwhite for a year now and I DO love it…but I think I don’t get as much reading time in because it’s uncomfortable to hold for a long time (among other reasons why I’m not reading as much). I spend a lot of time on my phone and then holding a tablet all day at work so my wrists have become kind of sensitive. I love the simplicity of the kindle and it’s easy to side load with calibre. Kindle basic is cute but no warm light and for that price it is a no. Kobo Clara BW fits the bill but I heard the screen isn’t nearly as crisp as kindle’s and the dark mode is in the book only which I think is annoying. Boox sounds interesting but out of budget for me and I heard it’s slow. Anyways I’d love to hear from others experience.

**Edit: forgot to add that yes I do use a strap and pop-socket. Strap is more comfortable than the popsocket but ultimately my hand starts getting uncomfortable and almost numb feeling after less than an hour

Kobo Libra 2 vs Clara BW vs ..?

/u/KoanSan · 2026-10-27 19:15 UTC

I have never owned a reader, and using my phone and laptop got tiring, so I am looking at some options for a dedicated one. I only read books, no comic books, so I want a BW reader for the better contrast. But I saw different opinions on the matter - some saying that carta 1300 is way better, others that 1200 offers better contrast. I don't mind the form factor and size, I carry around my backpack anyway, but I do want the best contrast / deepest blacks that I can buy - right now I found a used KL2 at the same price as a new Clara BW.

So, what is your experience? Should I get the used Libra? The Clara? Maybe something else (jailbroken kindle paperwhite12)? Thanks.

Trading Kindle for Kobo

/u/Charming-Grass-9480 · 2026-10-27 21:24 UTC

Hello, I want to ask for some people's opinions. I live in Canada and have had a Kindle basic for a few years. It works fine, but after I bought it, I realised that a Kobo is better if you live in Canada because you can borrow books directly from Libby?

If anyone has experience with this I'd greatly appreciate it. As well as some recommendations where to buy one? And if it's actually that easy to borrow books through a library and have it sync to your Kobo?

Thanks in advance!

How do you hold e-readers for long with comfort?

/u/K-H-C · 2026-10-27 02:45 UTC · source

I've always had problem holding my Boox Nova Air 7.8" (235g) and Boox Go 7 BW 7" (195g) for long. I did a bit of research and bc I like basic CADing and printing, I try to think of some solutions myself but couldn't find a satisfying one.

Band strap is okay, only that it rubs the skin of my fingers a bit, presses down and straightens my fingers too much. Also the shadows of the clips are a bit annoying when reading;

TPU grip thingy is okay, but when my palm get sweaty it becomes slippery and difficult to hold. Also it blocks the power button sometimes, depending on the device. Oh and it isn't reversible, I had to print one for each side, left and right;

Finger ring thingy is my original design, the hook thing replaces my pinky at the bottom of the device. I use it with 2~4 fingers depending on how tall the device is. However, even if I set its thickness to 7.5mm, it still leaves indentations on my fingers after ~30 minutes;

I haven't tried popsockets yet, I can't find a good way to stick anything on the back of Go 7 with that grainy texuture and I kinda don't want to leave a mark on it. Magsafe case is one solution, but I imagine it adds up weight real fast.

How do you guys hold your devices through long reading sessions?

Just picked up the Clara BW!

/u/HotCheetos998 · 2026-10-27 01:53 UTC · source

I've never been a big reader but want to get into it. I've bought 2 books and read the other for an hour and I'm absolutely loving it so far. I can already tell this is gonna be so nice for winding down before bed instead of scrolling social media. I bought it on a whim and did like 5mins of research before I bought it, if you guys have any tips for someone getting into reading or just Kobo eReaders in general I would really appreciate it

Anyone heard about XPOD?

/u/S-S-Ahbab · 2026-10-27 16:01 UTC · source

Found this cheap chinese ereader on Alibaba. Never heard of the brand XPOD.

Tempted just to see what an android 11 reader at 79 usd look like. But It'll probably a waste of 100 usd (with shipping).

Are there any better android ereaders around 100 usd?

I know that Xteink s4 is available for 95 usd on alibaba.

Good suggestions for an E-Reader?

/u/XPL0S1V3 · 2026-10-27 23:02 UTC

Hey guys. Recently took up an interest in an E-Reader. I'd read on my iPad but I cannot stare at it for too long or else my eyes would strain.

I don't need anything dance, something without backlight would be enough since I have a lamp. Something book sized would be nice.

I looked at XTEINK stuff but I think it's too small for my use. I've considered buying a used kindle/kobo on marketplace since I'm on a tight budget + the fact that I can jailbreak those is appealing.

Forgot to add: browser functionality would be nice for AO3.

Recommendations for tablet e-reader

/u/kirstenpenelope · 2026-10-27 17:28 UTC

I'm looking for a new device to read books on and I think I want a tablet for 3 reasons - 1) the robustness of the screen (within reason); 2) the backlight; 3) the ability to use apps (specifically Libby and BorrowBox but also an e-reader app that isn't Kindle). I currently have a Kindle Fire with a 7" screen but it's pretty old so the battery life is shot. I'm also fed up of Amazon advertising everywhere!

I'd like something of a similar size (although from what I've learned so far it seems like I may have to be willing to go a bit bigger), running on Android and not a Kindle. Can anyone recommend anything? I'd be willing to move away from tablets if there's an e-reader that does everything I need it to. Ideally not more than £150.

I had settled on a Nokia T10 but now I'm reading that updates on it will end in 2026 and I'm not sure what that means for how long I'd be able to keep using the device? It would literally only be used as an e-reader. Would very much welcome advice from people more knowledgeable than me about this!

Boox Picco 1st Impressions

/u/freedompksg · 2026-10-26 12:55 UTC · source

Here's the first few things I've noticed since playing around with it and comparing it to my Xteink X4 (v1)

Physical Build

- A lot lighter than my X4, really disappears due to its light weight when using it.

- Button rockers on the side are not loose compared to earlier reviews shared of the engineering/production model. Glad they fixed that. But noticed its not as easy to click and press down compared to my X4. The travel distance of the buttons is also shorter in comparison. Would actually say my X4 feels better in responsiveness and satisfying feel.

Screen

- I feel the contrast is better on the Picco. It's more pleasant on the eyes than the X4

- It's not as flush as the X4 but thats because it has the front light (the biggest reason I bought the Picco)

Software (on the Picco)

- Updated to v1.0.3 after starting up in the settings page over wifi. It came pre loaded with the v1.0

- Like how you can customize how the system responses when you are reading, the settings are broken up to a 3x3 9 box grid selection you can customize. I think its great.

- Pretty intuitive didn't take long to adjust to using the device and navigating around

- Don't get the point of the set up process of telling me to scan a QR code to download the Boox Tiles app to transfer books when the app isn't available in my country's app store.

- I have a clock shown while reading but I can't seem to find the setting to change the time?

- Really ticked by the large spacing after the ' character in every single book I transferred, as well as the preloaded The Odyssey.

Extra: Case & Screen Protector

- The case was really hard plastic, but the magnetic attachment works well. Didn't help at all with the side button's responsiveness and experience for me. Preferred not to have it on at all

- Those typical non-matte clear screen protector plastics. Was a nightmare for me to put on and wasted 2 pieces despite having no issues applying similar ones on my Kobo and my tablet. So maybe it's just a skill issue for a small device with less tolerance... but I might keep a look out on the market for a glass or ceramic screen protector for easier application.

Overall

While the device does feel premium and and great to simply hold in my hand, but I do have to press the side button frequently as it is a smaller screen, the experience of the rocker side buttons stand out a lot over time. While they fixed the issue of being loose, it doesn't feel crisp at all to press and a rather disappointing experience. It's good they have the touch screen feature which I have ended up using more of to turn the page. (And I really liked the side button pressing experience on my X4)

Would love to wait longer to remain on the stock firmware, but there seems to be so many gaps in it that it seems it will take awhile to address all of it and that the Picco wasn't actually ready to ship by October or even November. That's also factoring in how the release went with later than expected shipping and what the community feels is a lack of communication in updates to the shipments going out even though they pre-ordered.

I think I had high hopes of this device replacing my Xteink X4 v1. But while functionally it is in fact a upgrade with the front light, while still retaining a usb c (the main reason i didn't get the X4 Pro) and even more weightless feel, it feels like there is much disappointment in the overall product received in build quality and software.

Boox go 6 vs 2nd gen

/u/moulindelick · 2026-10-27 16:42 UTC

I was wondering if anyone has used both and can give advice.

I prefer the casing to the first one and don't need stylus support. I've read that the screen is crisper with more contrast on the first one also.

2nd gen I've read is snappier which is obviously a big plus.

I'm wondering how to compromise. Is it worth having the slower machine for the better looking device and screen? Or have a duller screen with the casing I don't like for a speedier experience?

Just how slow is the first gen? I currently have a paperwhite 11th gen and a boox air note 5 c.

Love the form factor of the note 5 c with how thin it is and the harsh angles. Would love a 6 inch version of that casing.

Thanks.

Boox Go Color 7 (Gen II) now or wait for Kaleido 4?

/u/goldmundundnaseweiss · 2026-10-27 11:48 UTC

Hello there, e-reader community!

Quick story time:

I used to be a printed-book enjoyer for almost all my life until the Xteink X4 got me into e-reading in early 2026. Ever since, I've been reading mainly on this tiny little device.
On the go, it's amazing (except for the missing frontlight, maybe, but I've made my peace with that).

Now, for home reading, I have developed an increasing urge for a larger screen, so I've been considering buying a color e-reader for the past few weeks.
After watching countless reviews and reading easily twice as many Reddit discussions, I thought I had finally settled the discussion for myself by choosing the Boox Go Color 7 (Gen II).

It has its weaknesses, including being rather fragile, and from what I've heard, Boox customer service is not the best or friendliest, especially in the case of fractured screens. Nonetheless, since I will be using it at home 95% of the time and it otherwise ticks all the boxes for me, I wanted to wait for Black Friday to order one, up until yesterday.

That was when I learned that E Ink had announced Kaleido 4.

I'm a med student, and I intend to use it for home reading and Anki (especially for anatomy), so I have something that's easier on the eyes during long study sessions. Also, I'd use it for the occasional comic/manga read and Babbel/Duolingo lesson.
Edit: For my main workload I already own a tablet and a laptop. So no heavy PDF reading, especially of large medical textbooks, and no PDF editing at all. Apart from regular reading, it's really just Anki and the occasional non-educational annotation on works of fiction or non-fiction, plus language learning apps.

My questions are:

With Kaleido 4 being right around the corner, would you still buy the current iteration of the Boox Go Color 7 or wait for the implementation of the new technology?

In your experience, how long does it take for big players such as Boox to implement new screen technologies?

Thank you for your time and help!
